“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 1)

I.                   Why Study Sin?

A.     Sin is the only thing that causes God to blot one out of His Book (Exodus 32:33)

B.     Sin is the only thing that causes God to cast one into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:15)

II.                What is Sin?

A.     Sin is what God is not pleased with (Psalm 5:4)

B.     Sin is what God will not dwell with (Psalm 5:4)

C.     Sin is what God hates (Psalm 5:5)

D.     Sin is what God will destroy (Psalm 5:6)

E.      Sin is what God abhors (Psalm 5:6)

F.      Sin is what God is angry about (Psalm 7:11)

G.     Sin is what God will not look upon (Habakkuk 1:12-13)

H.     Sin is what God will revenge (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9)

I.        Sin is what God will punish (Hebrews 10:26-31)

J.       Sin is what God will separate from (Isaiah 59:1-2, Hebrews 7:22,26)

K.    Sin is a choice: knowing to do good, but choosing to do evil (James 4:17)

1.      God has written His good moral Law in every person’s mind (Acts 10:34, Hebrews 8:12)

2.      God has written His good moral Law in every person’s heart (Hebrews 8:12)

3.      God, the Creator, has revealed Himself and His Goodness to every person, through His good creation (Romans 1:18-20)

4.      God has revealed Himself and His Goodness to every person by giving sun, rain, fruitful seasons, food, and gladness (Acts 14:15-17, Matthew 5:44-45)

5.      God has created every person with a will to exercise freedom of choice (Genesis 2:16, Deuteronomy 30:19, Joshua 24:15, Isaiah 7:15-16, 56:4)

L.      Sin is choosing anything contradictory to God’s Word and Person (Romans 14:23, 10:17) ; for example:

1.      Putting anything before God (Exodus 20:3, Luke 9:23-25, 14:26-33, Matthew 6:33)

2.      Not repenting of sin and submitting to Christ (Acts 17:30, Luke 13:1-5, 2 Peter 3:9)

3.      Touching outside of marriage (Matthew 5:27-28, 1 Corinthians 7:1)

4.      Drinking alcohol (Hosea 4:11, Matthew 22:35-38, Proverbs 23:29-30, Isaiah 28:7, 1 Corinthians 10:31)

M.   Sin is choosing to break God’s Law (1 John 3:4)

1.      No other gods (Exodus 20:3; Luke 14:26)

2.      No idols (Exodus 20:4-6; Romans 6:16; 1 Corinthians 10:19-20)

3.      Do not misuse God’s Name (Exodus 20:7; Matthew 12:36-37; Philippians 2:10-11)

4.      Keep the Sabbath(Exodus 20:8-11;Matthew 11:28;Luke 10:38-2)

5.      Honor parents (Exodus 20:12; Matthew 15:3-6; Ephesians 6:1)

6.      Do not kill (Exodus 20:13; 1 Samuel 16:7; 1 John 3:15)

7.      Do not commit adultery (Exodus 20:14; Matthew 5:27-28)

8.      Do not steal (Exodus 20:15; 1 Corinthians 6:10,19-20)

9.      Do not lie (Exodus 20:16; Ephesians 4:25)

10.  Do not covet (Exodus 20:17: Ephesians 5:26; 1 Samuel 18:6-9)

*Conclusion: Sin is a choice to: (1) do what displeases God (2) not do the good that you know you should do (3) not do what God’s Word commands you to do (4) break God’s Law. It is a choice to willfully rebel against God - a spiritual crime. Because God has revealed Himself and His Goodness to every person, no person has an excuse for committing sin. As obedience demonstrates love for God, disobedience, or, sin, expresses hatred for God.

“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 2)

III.             What sin is not

A.     Sin is not something that people are born with or into (James 4:17, Deuteronomy 1:39, Romans 14:23, 1 John 3:3, Psalm 51:5)

B.     Sin is not a fallen nature that people inherit from Adam (Ezekiel 18:20, Deuteronomy 24:16, 2 Kings 14:6)

C.     Sin is not something that people cannot stop doing (John 8:11, 5:14, 1 Corinthians 15:34, Daniel 4:27, 1 Corinthians 10:13, Hebrews 11:24-25, James 1:12-16)

D.     Sin is not merely a mistake, a “slip up”, or something that people “fall into” (James 4:17, 1:12-16)

E.      Sin is not something that people are ever supposed to commit (Romans 6:1,2,6,7,11)

F.      Sin is not something that God accepts (Psalm 7:11, 5:4-5, 11:5-6, Habakkuk 1:12-13, Lamentations 3:42)

G.     Sin is not something that a person can commit, even once, and still be a Biblically-defined Christian who is saved from sin (Hebrews 10:26-29, James 5:19-20, Ezekiel 18:24, 1 John 3:5-10)

H.     Sin is not part of human nature (Ezekiel 18:20, Genesis 1:26-27, 31, 2 Peter 1:3-4, 1 John 4:15-17)

I.        Sin is not something that God neither knew that people would, nor, knows that people will, commit (Genesis 22:1-2, 10-12, 20:7, Exodus 16:4, Deuteronomy 8:2, 13:3, Jeremiah 19:4-5, 32:35)

J.       Sin is not, and never was, part of God’s plan and intention for man (Genesis 1:26-28, 31, 2:16-17, 3:6-11, 22-24, 4:8-11, 6:5-7, Exodus 32;33, Revelation 20:15, Matthew 25:41)

*Conclusion: Sin is not a fallen, imperfect human nature that people inherit from Adam, either at birth or the age of accountability, as part of God’s plan. Rather, sin is a willful choice of rebellion against God that God neither intended, foreknew, nor, accepts.

“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 3)

IV.              What are the consequences of sin?

A.     By committing one sin you choose to separate yourself from God and Christ (Isaiah 59:1-2, Hebrews 7:22, 26)

B.     By committing one sin you choose to cause God to blot you out of His Book (Exodus 32:33)

C.     By committing one sin you choose to leave God’s Family (1 John 3:5-10)

D.     By committing one sin you choose to join satan’s family (1 John 3:8)

E.      By committing one sin you choose to make God angry with you (Psalm 7:11)

F.      By committing one sin you choose to make God hate you (Psalm 5:4-5, 11:5-6)

G.     By committing one sin you choose to cause your former righteousness to be forgotten (Ezekiel 18:24)

H.     By committing one sin you choose to die (Ezekiel 18:4)

I.        By committing one sin you choose to face fearful judgment (Hebrews 9:27)

J.       By committing one sin you choose to be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15)

*Conclusion: By choosing to commit one sin you choose to leave and reject God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit, submit to satan, die, and be cast into the lake of fire.

“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 4)

V.                 Doesn’t God say, in the Bible, that humans are all born sinners with a sinful nature and, therefore, will sin everyday?

A.     No. Because, according to God’s Word, humans are not born sinners, have not inherited a sinful nature from Adam, but were created in the Image and Likeness of God, God commands humans to live without sin as He does (Genesis 1:26-27, 2 Peter 1:3-4, Hebrews 4:15, 1 John 4:15-17, Romans 3:23, 6:1-2, 6-7,11-12, John 8:11, 5:14, 1 Corinthians 15:34, Daniel 4:27, Exodus 20:20, 1 Peter 4:1, Psalm 119:11, Hebrews 12:1, Job 5:17,24, 1 John 2:1, 3:6,9,5:18)

B.     No. Because, according to God’s Word, humans are not born sinners, have not inherited a sinful nature from Adam, but were created in the Image and Likeness of God, God commands humans to be holy and perfect as He is (Genesis 1:26-27, 2 Peter 1:3-4, Hebrews 4:15, 1 John 4:15-17, Leviticus 11:44, 1 Peter 1:15-16, Matthew 5:48, Deuteronomy 18:9-13, Genesis 17:1, 6:9, 1 Kings 15:14, 2 Chronicles 15:17, Job 1:1,8,2:3, Philippians 3:15, Hebrews 2:9-10, 5:9, 2 Corinthians 13:11, 1 Chronicles 12:38, 2 Kings 20:1-6, 1 Kings 15:3-5, 2 Samuel 22:31-33, Psalm 18:32, 138:8)

*Conclusion: God’s Word states that humans were not born sinners. Humans did not inherit a sinful nature from Adam, but were created in the sinless Image and Likeness of God, Himself. Because sin is not part of human nature, God commands all human beings to live lives that are as sinless, holy, and perfect, as his Own.

“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 5)

VI.              How can one be Biblically perfect?

A.     The definition of perfect is “to be complete in growth, mentality, and moral character”

B.     One must choose to be perfect (Matthew 19:21)

C.     One must live according to the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

D.     One must not listen to the occult (Deuteronomy 18:9-13)

E.      One must suffer (Hebrews 2:10, 5:9, 1 Peter 5:10)

F.      One must live patiently (James 1:4)

G.     One must not offend in word (James 3:2)

H.     One must be sanctified (Hebrews 10:14)

I.        One must live according to love (Ephesians 5:1-2, 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, Matthew 5:39-48)

VII.            How can one be Biblically holy?

A.     The definition of holy is “to make holy, purify, consecrate, venerate, sacred, physically pure, morally blameless, set apart, separation to God”

B.     One must set one’s life aside from sin, self, society, and satan, to live only to and for Christ (Exodus 22:31, Leviticus 21:6)

C.     One must make God’s Holiness their Standard and obligate oneself to follow God’s Example (Leviticus 11:44-45, 1 Peter 1:13-17, Leviticus 19:2, 20:23-27)

D.     One must remember that God will turn from one if one is not holy (Deuteronomy 23:14)

E.      One must remember that one will be dissolved with the world if one is not holy (2 Peter 3:11)

F.      One must remember that one will not see the Lord unless one is holy (Hebrews 12:14)

G.     One must remember that God has not called one to be unclean, and then refrain from all uncleanness (1 Thessalonians 4:7)

H.     One must keep God’s Commandments (Deuteronomy 28:9)

I.        One must live in the fear of God (2 Corinthians 7:1, Proverbs 8:13, 3:7)

J.       One must remember that one must live a holy life to be judged holy after death (Revelation 22:11)

K.    One must remember that if one does not live a holy life one will be cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:6)

*Conclusion: As sin is a choice, living in a manner that is holy and perfect is also a choice. To live a life that is holy and perfect, one must choose to live a life that is holy and perfect, at all cost. One must then choose to always exercise love towards God and all people, imitate Christ’s Holy life to the letter, live according to the Scriptures, and remember that one will not see Christ, but will be cast into the lake of fire, after death, if one refuses to be holy, during life.

“To Sin or Not to Sin ?  That is the Question” (part 6)

VIII.        What must be done by one who has sinned and is headed for the lake of fire, in order to be saved from one’s sins?

A.     One must despise one’s sinful life, repent, turn to God, do works meet for repentance, put faith in Christ to save one from one’s sins, or one will perish (Job 42:6, Luke 13:1-5, Acts 26:19-20, 20:21)

B.     One must make a verbal covenant and  commitment to obey Christ as one’s Master, forever (Romans 10: 9,10,13)

C.     One must work out one’s own salvation with fear (hating and departing from sin) and trembling (Philippians 2:12-13)

D.     One must disown oneself, love others less than Christ, constantly choose that which diminishes oneself, and follow Christ (Luke 9:23-26, 14:26-33)

E.      One must do one’s duty of fearing God and keeping his commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

F.      One must love God with all one’s heart, mind, and soul, and love one’s neighbor as oneself (Matthew 22:35-40)

G.     One must love God by obeying God and love one’s neighbor by giving one’s neighbor God (John 14:15, 1 John 4:8)

H.     One must maintain salvation, by grace through faith which works by love through obedience (Ephesians 2:8, Galatians 5:6, John 14:15, Hebrews 5:9, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8)

I.        One must know that one’s old man is crucified with Christ, reckon oneself dead to sin and alive to God through the Lord Jesus Christ, and go and sin no more (Romans 6:1-2, 6-7,11, John 8:11, Daniel 4:27, 1 Peter 4:1)

J.       One must endure with Christ through temptation, tribulation, to the end of one’s life, and thereby be saved (Matthew 24:13)

*Conclusion: Stop sinning, surrender to Christ, live a sin-free life of obedience to Christ, forever, in order to do God’s Will, and be saved from sin and the lake of fire.
